JONDEECO MANIFESTO 2011
In 2009 we formed The JonDeeCo Co-op, in which friends and fans could participate directly in the production of my CD ‘It’s Not as Bad as it Looks’… through our people’s support, we were able to master and distribute the recording which went on to top several year-end lists, including being named album of the year by The Washington Post’s Geoffrey Himes.
This was well before the current cascade known as Kickstarter, and we believe the co-op helped to set the stage for the various forms of online patronage which have sprung up since.
In the JonDeeCo Manifesto 09, which announced the birth of the co-op, I cited the death of Record Label culture and the shifting playing field in the making and marketing of music as the prime drive behind the idea. I stated my belief that The Old Way was dead and that no one knew what The New Way was yet. I fear I might have even used the word ‘paradigm’ once or twice. Sorry.
And I also said that JonDeeCo was unafraid to look stupid while trying to figure out just exactly what that New Way was.
Well, we weren’t.
And we did.
And we think now we might just have figured it out.
Instead of having just a Label, instead of asking for support for just a record, instead of just pitching a single project…what if the co-op became a self-sustaining source for ALL the creative projects at JonDeeCo? Not just ‘a record’ but songs, concerts, demos, lyrical sketches AND a record…not just my album art, but my drawings, paintings and photos…not just a blog, but poetry, prose and stories…not just recordings but webcast performances from the roof of my goddamn house… A CONSTANT TORRENT OF ONLINE CONTENT AVAILABLE EXCLUSIVELY TO CO-OP MEMBERS.
Here at JonDeeCo, innovation is Job #1 (or at least 3 or 4…we hate modernity but we embrace change) and now we have leapt joyfully into the current century. For a monthly co-op membership fee of $10 (yes, TEN DOLLARS, one hundred twenty for an entire year) we will provide the following:
= A NEW SONG EVERY MONTH, DOWNLOADABLE TO MEMBERS
= A LIVE MONTHLY WEB-CONCERT EACH MONTH OR
A MONTHLY WEB CONCERT ONLINE EDITION OF ‘THE JON DEE & FRIEND SHOW’, WITH A DIFFERENT SPECIAL GUEST EACH MONTH
= A NEW PIECE OF VISUAL ART FOR DOWNLOAD EACH MONTH
= SOME MONTHS THE BEAR WILL ADDRESS CO-OP MEMBERS QUESTIONS
= EXCLUSIVE ACCESS TO NEW ALBUM SLATED FOR JANUARY 2012
